Somerset County Council resolved to adopt the Somerset Minerals Plan: Development Plan document up to 2030 on 18 February 2015.
The part of the plan that we are most interested in is Energy Minerals…
Most governments across the globe are looking for greater energy security. This has a local impact, as industry seek to discover and exploit accessible reserves of energy minerals (such as oil, gas and coal) without causing unacceptable environmental impacts.
Somerset has extracted coal in the past; however, further coal mining in Somerset is unlikely. The county potentially has oil and gas reserves; for example within coal beds or possibly within its shale resource. Minerals policy needs to ensure there is a robust local policy on this issue, providing clarity to industry and also to local communities who might be concerned about what any proposals for exploration, appraisal and/or production might mean.
